Antique Bianchini Ferier French Fabric House Hand Carved Wood Block

A beautiful antique French print block that was used for hand-printing textile patterns. This one features what I think may be impressionist koi. Hand carved and created in Lyons, France, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the Bianchini Ferier Fabric House, this piece is truly a work of art.

Carved into the back is the number 3
Dimensions: Approximately 11.5” x 9.75” x 2”
The piece is in overall great shape, but there are a few places where the wood is chipped or and therefore part of the pattern is missing (see pictures).
This block was imported for Robinson’s department store sometime in the early-to-mid 1960s.

Paper label on the back reads, Be the first to discover print blocks…collected by Robinson’s from the House of Bianchini Ferier. Inspired by the design of Dufy, Bonfils, Laurent and Charlemagne, these hand-carved blocks were used to hand-print elegant fashion fabrics in Lyons, France thirty-five to 100 years ago. Each an original, each hand-selected!”

As a child, I loved going with my mama and grandparents to yard sales, estate sales, and thrift stores as we shared the love of sifting for treasures. That tradition has been continued into my adulthood and I am honored to share my unique finds with you.
