Antique Stoneware Majolica Pottery Pitcher | Primitive Arts and Crafts

A gorgeous Majolica stoneware with embossed provincial scenes - one side has 2 men and a dog out in the fields, the other has 2 women, a dog, and man in front of a hearth. This beautiful piece features a glaze that goes from a pale turquoise drip to green to brown. This particular pitcher, with its pastoral scenes and dual-tone glaze is representative of 19th-century European pottery production. Such pitchers were often used for serving milk or water and were prized for their aesthetic appeal as much as their function. The detailed relief work and the combination of green and brown glazes are hallmarks of the period, reflection a taste for rustic and narrative imagery in decorative arts. There is heavy crazing on the piece (due to its age) and a few small places that were either missing the glaze originally or the glaze has chipped (near the spout, rim, handle and bottom), see pictures for details. Scuffs and scrape commensurate with age.
