Pre-1905 Monmouth Pottery Moonshine Cookie Jar | Stoneware Crock

This rustic yellowware Crock-shaped Cookie jar is a wonderful find. It features the Monmouth pottery maple leaf stamp on the base (which dates it pre-1905 when Monmouth Pottery was acquired by Western Stoneware Company). The top of the jug is the rich brown that stoneware is known for and has a good portion of the original cork still attached. The bottom of the cook jar has the yellow ware glaze and “Cookies” surrounded by floral elements stamped in Brown. The bottom is unglazed and features impressed mark of maple leaf with Monmouth, Ill, USA. No noted chips or cracks or crazing. A few scuffs/marks/patina commensurate with age. Glaze dripped/uneven in places.

Provenance: Monmouth marked its wares with a maple leaf before they were acquired, and they continued to do so until 1930. Pieces before 1906 featured an incised ‘Monmouth CO.’ along the base, and after this year the mark was revised to be the engraved ‘Monmouth Pottery, Monmouth, Ill.’. Some of the Monmouth lines after the 1930s are unmarked but are still recognized as distinct through the glaze and specific kind of clay used during manufacturing. Monmouth lines are celebrated for the mesmerizing salt-glazing technique employed to create matte finishes.
