1920s Antique Velvetina Egypta Nail Polish Box from Goodrich Drug Co.

A very rare find indeed: nail polish from 100 years ago. With the Egyptian style advertising that was very popular during the Art Deco era, this unique little treasure perfect for a shadow box, stocking stuffer, or a home decor accent piece for your home or beauty shop, whether your style is MCM, art deco, Victorian, farmhouse, nana chic, or????

I think the old price tag can be removed without damaging the box underneath.
Directions on the back of the box: Moisten the palm of your hand, rub “Velvetina Nail Polish over it, let it dry, and rub your nails vigorously upon it until the desired lustre is obtained. A buffer is not needed. Hands may be washed without destroying this high polish.
Box is approximately 2 ⅜” 1.25” x 1”
Wear and tear commensurate with age.

Like most face powders of the early 1900s, Velvetina’s Egypta was part of a larger toiletries line intended to accompany the brand’s Egypta fragrance. While the powder and other items were introduced in 1915, in 1917 the company released a new box for the face powder: a “beautiful new style Oriental design bronze green and straw colored boxes,” according to one ad. In the center a silhouette of a woman’s head shows a crown with an uraeus, the stylized, rearing cobra that symbolized divine authority and is associated with the goddess Wadjet.

The Goodrich Drug Co. was big business in Omaha from 1904 until 1934. ….The business later became the Goodrich Cosmetic Co., and only J. Emerson (son) was listed. Mysteriously according to Fike, by 1916 the company name had changed to the Velvetina Co. Inc. Fike also indicated that the product, Velvetina, was still being advertised as late as 1942. I found the Goodrich Cosmetic Company address from a number of great ads looking for beautiful, young saleswomen. The company was housed both a cosmetic shop and their laboratories at 1114 Farnam.

Most items in my shop are vintage and are not brand new and come from estate sales. The items may show minor age-related wear and/or minor flaws consistent with the date of manufacture (please be sure to check photos carefully as they are part of the description).
